Vanessa Coleman Jury Coming From Nashville

04/09/2010

~Vanessa Coleman

After much speculation, we now know that Judge Richard Baumgartner, the prosecution, and the defense are presently in Nashville to begin the jury selection process for Vanessa Coleman’s trial for the carjacking, rape, kidnapping, and murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom in January 2007.

What is interesting and possibly coincidental, Coleman’s boyfriend, Letalvis Cobbins also had a jury from Nashville and he now sits in prison for life – without parole.

Makes you wonder will ‘Nessie” fair any better – we won’t have to wait much longer to find out!

When the judge and the attorneys return to Nashville on April 27, they will question potential jurors and select 12 jurors and 4 alternates.  That process is expected to be completed in 3 days.

    donchais,

Thank you for covering this case. I know it means a great deal to you. I wish the MSM would cover it.

Personally, I think little Ms. Nessie deserves the death penalty. She admitted to watching Cobbs rape Channon and also to giving her some water to drink. I continually ask myself WTH is wrong with Ms. Nessie.

I listened to her police interview, and like so many others it gave me a headache.

donchais, your blog is great, and I will be following you!

      Tezi,

Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words! Yes, this case means a great deal to me and so many others. Thank goodness it is streamed so at least and we get to follow the meting out of justice.

It is believed by many that Vanessa was so pissed at Cobbins for raping Channon, she probably took perverse delight in raping Channon with a foreign object (possibly Chris also) which caused the horrific, brutal injuries to her genital area. How in God’s name do you participate in that weekend of torture and proceed in making a a huge breakfast for all the perpetrators while Channon lay suffocating in the garbage can not 2-3 feet away? Sorry, will get off the soapbox now!

‘Nessie’, if as in the Cobbins verdict (which was unacceptable and upsetting to the Christian and Newsom families) will get a minimum of LWOP (I do believe Baumgartner will stack the sentences as he did with Thomas) and if that’s all she gets – she should get on her knees and thank God!

Thanks for the update Donchais. This story is so horrific, I hope it is resolved soon.
I think TN has it right to bring a jury in for a trial versus moving a whole trial. That is something that not many (that I know of)states allow. IL doesn’t…I asked the SAO and the PD in the Sheley case if they would consider it and they had never heard of bringing a jury in. During these economic times it makes good sense. The accused can get an “impartial” jury and those affected by the case don’t have to upturn their lives any more than neccessary. No…I guess that makes too much sense. I personally feel that change of venue is worthless in this day and age of 24 hour media cycles and the internet, but if a defense demands it this seems a good way to deal with it.

Oh katfish, I do so hope this ends soon for the poor parents! The lingering questions – did Boyd and Thomas kill Chris, the two other DNA profiles – I’m just not sure there will ever be complete closure. My fervent prayer is that Nessie’s parents have a ‘come to Jesus’ meeting with their daughter and she flips – however, she hasn’t paid them any mind so far!

Yup, totally agree about bringing in an outside jury instead of the change of venue!!! Be nice if all states ran towards the light!

Vanessa Coleman made, I believe, four statements to authorities. Only one has been released. You can guess what the other three are like. My understanding is that Coleman’s DNA was found on cloth strips binding Channon’s wrist. The defense is going to say that the cloth was from a bed that Coleman had been sleeping in. However, she supposedly admitted to holding Channon’s wrists at some point, which means Coleman had physical contact with a victim who died by agonizing torture.

The other difference from the first three trials is that Coleman kept a journal which the judge said has references to the victims. Remember, at the time the suspects thought they had wiped down Channon’s SUV and that there was nothing to tie them to the murders. Davidson unwittingly left a fingerprint which resulted in these four being arrested. What will the journal contain?

It is policy in Tennessee to bring a jury to the venue where the crime took place, rather than send the trial elsewhere. For example, Scott Peterson’s trial was moved from Modesto, California to Redwood City.

I do know that in FL, if the defense asks for a change of venue and a sequestered jury, the judge can bring in an outside jury. I’m just not sure if it can be done under any circumstance.

donchais, I feel your frustration about Ms.Nessie. I do think that she raped Channon with a foreign object. And how she could fix breakfast like nothing was amiss in that house. I just can’t fathom that at all.

I really hope you are right that stack the sentences like he did with Thomas. LWOP would work nicely too though.

Thanks again donchais for the very well written articles that you have posted so far. I am looking forward to more!

This thread (http://www.wate.com/Global/story.asp?S=12276964) is from WATE, the Knoxville ABC affilliate. It has a video of Friday’s events in Nashville. Judge Baumgartner is shown addressing the prospective jurors. Note that Miss Coleman has a smug expression.
