Joran van der Sloot – She Used My Laptop

06/08/2010

Fox is reporting that van der Sloot confessed late Monday that he had indeed murdered Stephany Flores.

He told police that he became enraged when Stephany used his laptop without permission and discovered that he was involved in the Natalee Holloway case…so he broke her neck.

“I did not want to do it,” La Republica quoted him as saying. “The girl intruded into my private life.”

The case will now be handed over to prosecutors who may present formal charges as early as this morning.  van der Sloot will be assigned to a prison while he awaits trial. Murder convictions carry a maximum of 35 years in prison in Peru.  Peru has no death sentence or life sentence.

Lima’s deputy medical investigator, Victor Tejada, told the media Flores’ battered body was found on the floor in the room more than two days later after her death and that she was killed by blows with a blunt object, probably the tennis racket found in the hotel room.  Her body was found face down and clothed with no indication of sexual assault.

However, CNN indicates a police report leaked on Monday says Flores was found in his hotel room on the floor, half-dressed.

An employee went to collect two days payment for the room and entered with a pass key when van der Sloot didn’t answer the door.  She found Flores’ body on the floor, dressed in a black T-shirt and red panties, and half-covered with a piece of white clothing.  Flores was bleeding from her nose according to the report.

CNN said van der Sloot will likely be sent to one of three maximum security facilities: Castro Castro, Piedras Gordas or Lurigancho.

Facility is way too kind of description for Peruvian prisons. Hellhole is probably more apropos!

van der Sloot is represented by a state-appointed lawyer and a Dutch Embassy official.  He did state that he was seeking to hire his own counsel.

He faces a maximum sentence of 35 years however, indications are the sentence may be lessened if there is a confession which may be the sole reason van der Sloot confessed.

If van der Sloot survives his stay in a Peruvian prison, he still faces a maximum of 50 years in the U.S. on fraud and extortion charges!

    donchais,
    Morning!!! Thanks for the article!!!!
Well, I never thought I would say this but Joran is smarter than KC, for that matter. My hubby used to say if KC had confessed she would be out of jail in no time… but of course, we all know that JB was in this for the glory. We all know that her entourage of lawyers could NOT care less about her, all they want is to keep their names on the headlines. KC is too stupid to understand it. My perception is that KC didn’t realize the gravity of her situation and Joran did. Both are psychopaths, in my opinion.

I believe Joran knows the evidence is too stacked against him which is the only reason he confessed.

He was also told sentences tend to be lighter if there is a confession. Otherwise, he would be jerking everybody around as he has done with the Natalee Holloway case…just my opinion!

I just heard on HLN that he could get as little as 10 years, should he survive. Then, he can come to the US on the extortion. He will have a previous conviction under his belt and probably get the max.

    donchais,
True, it might have been the reason and a smart decision, I should say besides the evidence they have as you said.
    Ritanita,
Wow, that’s so little time served. I bet US Marshals will be standing at the jail front door in Peru when Joran gets out to take him back to the US.
I am just happy Natalee’s mom will have some sense of justice, she deserves it.

I’ve heard that Aruba is reopening the Natalee Holloway case and he will be sent to Aruba before the States for that trial. Anyone know if this is true?

    Geesh! I know that Peruvian prisons are hellholes and that Joran may not survive but 35 years max for murder??? {shaking head}

Perhaps the Peruvian authorities used some not so gentle power of persuasion methods to get Joran to confess…

This is not a “really” important point but Jean Caserez reported the white clothing Van Der Sloot partially covered Stephany Flores with was the white oxford shirt that VDS had on when they entered the room.
I hope he gets more than 10 years. Just because he says in his confession how he came to kill her doesn’t make it so. If she was killed during an attempted rape, things may change significantly. I suppose toxicology will be important.
