Dakota Lane Brutally Killed

11/12/2010

The sweet-faced little boy was a defenseless 4-year-old.  His life was tragically ended when he was attacked with a pair of scissors and stabbed 36 times during a robbery/home-invasion.

His mom, who is eight months pregnant, tried in vain to fend off the attacker. Stephanie Lane escaped without serious injuries and Dakota’s 6-year old brother, who was sleeping in another room, was unharmed.

Stephanie Lane said she did not know the attacker, but was able to provide a detailed description.  Aaron Laconsello, 18, was arrested Tuesday by police patrolling the campus of Bacone College, approximately three miles from the crime scene.  Police spotted Laconsello walking through a parking lot of a lumber company. He was arrested and taken into custody without incident, police said.

“In my entire career, I’ve never seen anything like this,” Muskogee police Cpl. Pedro Zardeneta told Kansas City’s KMBC. “It’s sad.”

Laconsello is being held without bond in the Muskogee County Detention center.  He was arraigned in court Wednesday, but was not formally charged.

Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Moore said he will file first-degree murder charges and will most likely ask for the death penalty based on the evidence so far.  First-degree robbery and assault with a deadly weapon are also being charged.

Colt Hooper, 19, his cousin, said Laconsello had been staying with him in a house a few doors down from the Lanes. He said his cousin had recently been kicked out of his mother’s house, in nearby Tahlequah.

Laconsello, no stranger to criminal activity, was arrested twice in June for trespassing and public intoxication in Cherokee County. He was also banned from the Northeastern State University campus.

Several people said they saw Laconsello drinking earlier that evening.
Drunk or not, neighbors said they can’t explain the killing.

“It’s just so senseless that a 4-year-old defenseless little boy, you know, would have to be brutally murdered like he was,” said Jack Bumgartner, Dakota’s grandfather.

Seems heaven just got another precious, little angel.

Something is terribly wrong with this fellow. I suppose I’m putting it mildly, but I can’t quite fathom this one at all. This guy needs to be out of society forever…
