Christian-Newsom – Thomas Retrial Set

02/28/2013

050310coleman_thumbnail_t320_240Judge Walter Kurtz has set May 13 for the start of the retrial for George Thomas.  Pretrial motions will be heard on March 25.

Along with Lemaricus Davidson and Letalvis Cobbins, Thomas was charged in the carjack, torture, rape and murders of Channon Christian and Chris Newsom.

Davidson was sentenced to death; Cobbins to life and Thomas’ original sentence was life.  Davidson and Cobbins are appealing Judge Kurtz’s denial for retrials

Judge Kurtz granted the retrial for Thomas because he determined he could not sit as the thirteenth juror.  The original sentence was thrown out after the presiding judge, Richard Baumgartner was found to be abusing prescription pills during the trial.

My prayers and thoughts are with Mary and Hugh Newsom and Deena and Gary Christian who will once again have to endure the horrific details of the torture and slayings of their children.

WATE

Thanks for the heads-up. I hope, as with the Coleman trial, it goes quickly to a guilty verdict.

donchais, I watched this trial and it was so disturbing on so many levels. I remember the pain on the parents’ faces, having to listen to the details of the torture and murder. What I heard during this trial bothered me for months. I did not realize one of the creeps was getting a retrial. As you, I feel very badly for these parents having to listen to the gruesome details again.

Rache, Vanessa Coleman was retried in November under Judge Blackwood!

Tell me Vanessa Coleman got life again…with no parole. This makes me think if Arias is convicted, somehow she will get a retrial. Insane.

She was originally sentenced to 53 years. She was retried only for the crimes against Channon and received 35 years. Having spent 6 years in jail already, she would be eligible for parole in about 5 years. The families vow to do everything in their power to make sure she isn’t granted parole.

I don’t think Coleman will be paroled the first time. However, she’ll be up for it again and again as time goes on.

Lisa, do a search here on Christian-Newsom and you will find the stories I wrote since I opened this blog. A good beginning is Death on Chipman Street http://www.knoxnews.com/videos/detail/chipman-murders-channon-christian-chris-newsom/

I’ll leave it to you to guess why MSM didn’t cover!

Thank you for keeping these 2 beautiful people in your blog. This is one of the most revolting crimes in the the history of America. Death is too good for the rotten demons that committed the crimes.

For the benefit of anyone who hasn’t followed this case, and Thomas’ first trial in particular, the defense was that Thomas would have gone to the police for help but was too stoned on grass and afraid of the others to do so.

Former Judge Baumgartner went through four verdicts and four sentencing hearings without once giving a “13th Juror” verdict. Why wasn’t it seen as important until Baumgartner’s disgrace?
