Jodi Arias Murder Trial – Penalty Phase, Day 2

05/16/2013

Well there was a closed hearing and the records are sealed, but seems Nurmi and Willmott asked to withdraw because Jodi will not follow their advice.  Needless to say, Judge Stephens denied the request and opinion is, they had to get it on record.  Pretty much, Jodi has shot her chance for appeal!

Screen shot 2013-05-16 at 2.16.16 PMCourt begins (snort) at 1:54 with Nurmi asking to approach.

Judge Stephens reads instructions to the jury about LWOP or death and what mitigation proof is.

Nurmi looks bored out his mind, Willmott scribbling notes.

Nurmi up…

The verdict you reach will decide if the defendant spends the rest of her life in prison.

Objection, improper argument…

Approach.

The decision before you is life vs. death.  What you decide is binding.

Each and every one of you has to make your own moral assessment of what sentence is correct.

You don’t have to agree on the mitigating factors.

Jodi is doing her hardest to look pathetic.

Juan up….

You are not to act as an advocate.  You are charged to look at the 8 mitigating factors being presented.  They are flawed.

Nurmi objects…Approach…

The factor that Ms. Arias was only 27 doesn’t take away from the fact she stuck a knife into Mr. Alexander’s chest.

Objection…approach…

Where is the connection, how is that important.

She lacked support her own family…there’s nothing to connect to the murder.

Do you remember she took the stand and lied to you?

Grrrrr, Nurmi is objecting after every statement Juan makes!

She lacked support of her family.  Her mother is here!

She suffered abuse.  You never saw any evidence that was true, only what came out of her mouth.

All of the factors are from the defendant.

Juan done after shredding the mitigating factors.

Jury sent to the jury room for 5 minutes…

Nurmi asks to approach, yet again!

Mitigators:

1.  Defendant was 27 years old at the time of the offense.

2.  Defendant has no prior criminal history.

3.  Defendant was a good friend.

4.  Defendant lacked support from her family.

5.  Defendant suffered abuse and neglect as a child and as an adult.

6.  Defendant tried to make the best of her life.

7.  Defendant consistently tried to improve herself.

8.  She is a talented artist.

Per ritanita:

1.  Defendant was 27 years old at the time of the offense.  And still hadn’t gotten her GED.

2.  Defendant has no prior criminal history.  Unless you count that marijuana incident when she was 14.

3.  Defendant was a good friend.  All those gals with whom she attended high school prior to dropping out and the guys she dated.  Remember, she always stayed friends with them.

4.  Defendant lacked support from her family.  That she ran away from at 17 going on 18.  Which she refused to allow to visit her home where she lived with Darryl because she didn’t want them to snoop through her things.

5.  Defendant suffered abuse and neglect as a child and as an adult.  Yep, the wooden spoon and dad’s belt.  Oh, and let’s not forget Travis!

6.  Defendant tried to make the best of her life.  Gave up on PPL after earning about $5000 over two months.  Well, she did get her GED in jail.

7.  Defendant consistently tried to improve herself.  She kept looking for a more prosperous person to take care of her.  She read The Secret and all about Wicca.

8.  She is a talented artist.  As long as she traces magazine ads and colors them in.

Jury back…

Victim statements being read!

Steven Alexander is called.  He is struggling so hard not to breakdown. Screen shot 2013-05-16 at 2.53.15 PM

I am weeping though this.

I thought my big brother was bulletproof.  He was unbreakable.

Why would somebody do this to him?

How much did he suffer?

What was the last thing he saw?

What was the last thought in his head?

The last time I saw him was Christmas 2007.

He got to meet my daughter and hold her for the first time.

I have dreams of my brother stuffed in that shower and left to rot.

I was hospitalized several times.  I couldn’t be a husband to my wife.  We separated for two years.

Travis was meant to do so much more.  He never got to live his dreams.

Travis had a destiny and it’s up to us to maintain it.

Travis was so brutally ripped out of this world.

Screen shot 2013-05-16 at 3.06.48 PMSamantha is up now.

My family has been tortured by the loss of our brother.

We lost our father and shortly after our mother.  Travis was our strength.

Losing Travis has affected the health of our family.  Travis was our strength.

Travis motivated us.

Every day will never be the same.

I am totally destroyed by this.

Our family and the world will never get to see his goodness.

When I found out about Travis’ death, I remember my ears ringing and my stomach burning.

To this day, my mind paints a picture of what happened.

We have paid the ultimate price in losing Travis.

Travis was the glue in our family.

We were robbed of so many good memories.

We would give anything to have him back, anything.

Well that did me in…the family’s pain is palpable!

Noon recess called…

The freakin murderer is playing at the fake tears!

Hey, with that huge cross hanging off her neck, is the mitigation specialist warding off vampires or Jodi????

Something ain’t right that they are all in chambers this long! Don’t have a good feeling ’bout this! Gut, we are done for today!

The fracture between Arias and her attorneys is beyond apparent!   She’s dead meat! And the judge still can’t gain control!!!

6pm EDT, They are clearing the courtroom for everyone except family.

Too bad for Stephens, this is her first murder case she was assigned…think it’s a career killer!

Court resumes at (snort, snort…c’mon already…sheesh) 6:30 EDT…eyeroll!

Court called till 10 am PT. Monday… freakin knew it!

Twice, Jodi has passed papers backwards today!

Jinkasaurus said that she talked to JA’s mother (recently, like today) and her mother indicated that she wanted to testify in the mitigation phase but wasn’t called. Jinkasaurus and the other talking heads speculated their must be some strategic reason for leaving her out.

I wonder if it’s because Nurmi gave as a mitigating factor that JA had no prior criminal behavior, and JM could then ask her mom about the pot growing and god knows what other delinquent behavior she got up to. Just a guess.

    • 05/16/2013 at 6:48 pm

or that what she said in the interview with Flores could then be brought in.. can’t say lying since she was 14 and always been trouble would go down too well in mitigation.

    • TexiBelle
      05/16/2013 at 6:51 pm

Er wait do the attorneys get to question her character witnesses?

      • 05/16/2013 at 6:53 pm

no but Juan gets a chance at rebuttal and can bring things up there I would have thought

      • TexiBelle
        05/16/2013 at 7:00 pm

I hope so. The second I saw that “has no prior criminal history” on Nurmi’s pathetic list I was like “Play the videotape! Play the interview!”

And having her “art” as a mitigating factor is just pathetic. Let’s give all athlete rapists a pass too because hey, they’re talented athletes.

      • TexiBelle
        05/16/2013 at 7:03 pm

Not to pick on athletes. That was just the first analogy that came to mind.

Juan, on his cross, could ask about things he learned from Flores interview of her. Also, while Jodi said her parents never even visited her, her mother said she wanted to visit and Jodi didn’t want her to because she’d snoop through her things.

No, I think it is because Murmi said she had no family support but how can they calim that when she’s been in the court room everyday?

Didn’t catch the paper passing.. wth is with the lack of control in this court room?

The second paper passing was at the very end. She folded an 81/2 x 11 sheet of paper into 3 and handed it to a gentleman wearing a suit. She wasn’t sneaky about it at all.

Yeah! Donchais doesn’t have to make herself a “distinguished professor” or “found” a college. The college was NAMED after her by THOSE who instruct there and take classes there. And its not so limited as a “college” but its universality – 25 US States, east and west Canada, west and central Australia, and Eastern Europe make up the people who “founded” the university that built upon the college founded by Donchais . She provided the stimulus, funds, and space . In addition, she insisted upon remaining in the classroom; not just an administrator or fund raiser–a real professor!

This Judge has completely lost control! She has no business on this trial and it has cost the taxpayers of AZ twice what is should have. All this should have been sorted while we waited for the ME — Jodi made it to the courthouse on Tuesday, they should have gotten all this work done then. To think the jury was not going to return guilty of aggravator is ridiculous! This is cruel to the family! And now Brewer and Patty get a weekend paid by the good people of AZ. Just enough!

    • 05/16/2013 at 8:59 pm

Exactly HJ!! This has dragged on long enough…she could have court in session on Fridays to help speed this up but nooooo…lady leisure needs her 3 day weekend. I can’t rant long enough about this judge! I think I’m writing a letter, not that it will matter but I’ll feel better. I sent my letter out to Twitter btw. Hope others have too. Let’s get her off there ASAP!! I’m scared to read what she posts tonight (if this is in fact her). It’s going to send me into a feral rage!!

      • donchais
        05/16/2013 at 9:06 pm

Stephens has to follow Mesa, AZ standards…budget constraints require judges to do hearings, all day on Fridays and does not allow for paid staff (guards, cleaning staff, support staff, etc) takes a major dispensation for that…she may not be what we want, but be careful in your generalizations (lady leisure? she doesn’t have the day off, look up her schedule!) if you don’t know how the AZ system works, please!

      • Kristi
        05/16/2013 at 11:33 pm

I mailed mine too. I hope it works.

      • 05/17/2013 at 2:19 am

Sorry 😦 I wasn’t being mean or nasty…Lady leisure was meant to be a joke. Everyone else is posting the same things about Fridays amongst MANY other complaints about the judge and has been for weeks. As for Fridays, i went by what was being said here on this board…this is where i learned what I thought were the AZ rules. If they are not in fact correct and judge rants are frowned upon, I don’t feel I should be the only one singled out. I don’t understand .

As far as what most of my post was about , it was Jodi. I was referring to twitter and getting her off twitter, not the judge out of the court.

this afternoon’s crap is a total disgrace

    • 05/16/2013 at 7:01 pm

there is rebuttal… Juan is allowed rebuttal and I would say that would pertain to what is brought up in statments… but that’s just a logical guess cos can’t see why else he would have rebuttal but not for that.

    • ritanita
      05/16/2013 at 7:16 pm

The victim impact statements are directed to the jury. The mitigation witnesses are regular witnesses subject to cross examination. Jodi has her choice. She may either take the witness stand and testify or she may address the jury the way Steven and Samantha did.

      • HJ Madison
        05/16/2013 at 7:20 pm

Oh gees … which will it be? Probably advised to make a statement, but she wants on the stand …. wants to duke it out again with JM. Maybe that is contributing to all this hassle over the lawyers getting out. Nurmi wants a statement, she wants to testify, Nurmi does not want to ask her questions???

    05/16/2013 at 7:01 pm

Just watched Samantha’s and Steven’s victim impact statements. Thank God for croakerqueen. I cried throughout. When Steven said “I don’t want to look at my brother’s murderer anymore; I don’t want to hear my brother getting dragged through the mud” it was so powerful. He delivered those words with so much self-contained anger that they were all he had to say. He didn’t have to retell every disgusting lie that has been told about his beloved brother. Just those two sentences I think spoke volumes.
Samantha also was so eloquent. She let the jury know that she and her siblings had difficult childhoods without ever suggesting that they were victims. She was the epitome of class, the complete opposite of that monster sitting there crying. How DARE she cry! When just one week ago she besmirched Travis’ reputation and character yet again, and would do it every day of the week if she was allowed to. I agree with you, Syntara (I think it was you in a post earlier today) when you said that her tears make her even more evil. It’s so true. It’s not enough that she made up another false allegation of pedophilia and called him a hypocrite, when she is the biggest hypocrite that has ever lived. She has no empathy; her tears are… I don’t even know what they are, the tears of a clown? She’s so pathetic.

    • 05/16/2013 at 7:07 pm

ya that was I… she makes me sick!!! ‘weeping’ without having to remove her glasses and after that interview saying she can’t look at his family cos it reminds her of Travis “her abuser”. Yeah right.. can’t look at them cos they are everything she can NEVER be more like it! 😈

      • Lisa M
        05/16/2013 at 10:59 pm

Dr. Bethany Marshall was on Dr. Drew tonight – I love her! – and she gave a really good explanation of Jodi’s tears (assuming they’re real tears or she was actually sad- which Janine “the human lie detector” seemed to think they were) which is related to something I was trying to say in an earlier post but she stated it much better than I could. She said that for Jodi it’s as if she’s seeing a sad movie, you know how a tearjerker can make you cry especially if it you can relate to the experience in it (and Jodi did edify Travis after all). So she is feeling genuine sadness but her emotions are very “thin.” So it’s like when you come out of the movie theater after the sad movie you’re over it. It’s over and it’s back to life. That’s why she could switch from dismay at hearing her guilty verdict and minutes later give that interview.

I suspect the delay is because the people lined up to testify for JA haven’t had a chance to decode the secret magazine messages ordering them not to f*ck up.

I wonder if they’ll be allowed to show the video of Jodi doing yoga poses and laughing while she’s in the interrogation room. Why oh why does HLN have to keep showing that video and the one of Jodi doing her makeup before her Inside Edition interview? To remind us that she’s evil. We don’t need to be reminded every second! I cried the entire time Travis’s siblings spoke to the jury. It was heart wrenching. How did jury not tear up! I hated the hln camera for panning to Stabby’s face during their statement. No one gives a fuck how she looks or feels. I’m so proud of Travis’s family and especially Samantha for looking straight into Stabby’s eyes and her mothers eyes before she sat down.

Hi Cecelia, this has been a constant thought of mine, and I have mentioned it several times! I also thought today that at times she was trying to keep from laughing. Perhaps it’s becuz her evilness is so obvious. One can almost feel the evilness that seeps out of her. Her whacked out eyes were over the top today. It seems to me that several times she TRIED to cry, but each time it would turn in to more of her madness seeping through.

I’d like to take this moment to thank OJ for his courtroom demeanor and composure and for not wasting time during the criminal trial. I owe you an apology for calling you an asshole back then. Sure you comitted a serious and brutal and horrific double murder and even though you lied your ass off to get away with it, I must humbly ask for forgiveness…After what I’ve been a witness to these past few months I’ve learned that, Yes, there is a bigger asshole than you…

LMAO!!!!! in more ways than one!!!

  16. Harry Blanshard Wood
    05/16/2013 at 7:12 pm

We saw true emotion from the murderer twice: contempt for JM during CX, plus shock and realization that her life was over upon conviction. She really thought she would get away with it!

I think that is why she was so keen to get interviewed by Fox after conviction. She thinks her conviction will be reversed on appeal, due to her narcissism, but she cannot afford an appeal. So her scheme is to get JM to play the interview for the jury to ensure she gets the DP and a free appeal.

    • Lisa M
      05/16/2013 at 11:04 pm

Ah! Interesting. But how would Juan playing that interview get her an appeal?

      • Harry Blanshard Wood
        05/17/2013 at 2:31 pm

She thinks the jury will be more likely to give her the death penalty if JM plays the post-conviction interview of her saying she wants it. With the death penalty she will have lawyers appointed and paid for by the State of Arizona to handle an appeal for her. Any other sentence will require her to pay for her own appeal or find a lawyer who will do it pro-bono, which I think is unlikely.

Her legal team is currently paid for by the State because she is indigent and under the sixth amendment everyone is guaranteed competent legal representation during their criminal trial. The sixth amendment doesn’t guarantee legal representation for appeals but all states with the DP provide free legal representation for an appeal to those given a death sentence and are indigent.

This is why Nurmi/Wilmot are so fed up. In Jodi’s world she will be vindicated on appeal when she gets away from bad Juan Martinez and her incompetent legal team. That can’t happen unless she gets the DP because she can’t afford a lawyer. So she sets up the scheme with the interview and wants to testify during mitigation instead of just giving a statement so JM can play the interview during CX. This, of course, is totally contrary to her’s and probably any competent legal advice!

Jenkasaurus say all sorts of things that we have to question these days. Interestingly, Beth Karas said she was not sure, but did not see any actual tears. Both sit way in the last row and take notes, tweets, etc. and so can not watch the jury all the time. Plus, it is a large courtroom and it was packed!

Did anyone think Ho’s hair looked greasy? Her bangs looked oiled. Her eyes like someone punched her out (we could only be so lucky).

Her telling the interviewer last week that Nurmi told her there were no mitigating factors for her case was a lie. But how can it be proved? Attorney client privlege…And I don’t think Nurmi could even talk about it after the trial.

Also: Jodi will never throw herself on the mercy of the court. She won’t apologize; there is NO remorse. Proven to be an unrepentant liar on the stand, she will continue with the fake tears and righteous indignation when she tells the jury they weren’t allowed to see the real evidence of Travis’ pedophiliaand beatings and that that Juanster Martinez is a liar…

I think everything out of her mouth during that interview was a lie. And you’re right, there’s no way she’ll be remorseful. Didn’t Wurmi say she’s not going to talk about what happened but about herself? Maybe she should read from her Facebook profile and read all the wonderful ways she described herself on there.

  28. 05/16/2013 at 7:53 pm

Why does Jodi have to be checked on every 15 mins if she has nothing in her cell that she can use to hurt herself?

    • donchais
      05/16/2013 at 8:02 pm

ummm, err, uhhh…liability! Ever hear of clothing, bedding and anything else she smuggles in, like she has been caught doing before?

      • 05/17/2013 at 2:51 am

I asked my husband this same question…his answer: Who cares why..Lets be honest, they can put a loaded gun, a rope with a chair and beam set up, bottle of pills and razors and she still wouldn’t kill herself.

        True.

      • 05/17/2013 at 3:02 am

The reason I asked this is because the sheriff said she is checked thoroughly before she is locked back into her cell and that her cell is also checked thoroughly to make sure there is nothing she can hurt herself with.

And yes of course I know about the bedding and clothes (unfortunately, very much so, I had a 10 yr old family member commit suicide using clothing) so I dont understand how they could make such a statement when in fact it is still possible?

  29. 05/16/2013 at 7:55 pm

About the Tn jury’s work ethic – I know that some here may pitch a fit for what I’m about to say but so be it. I lived & worked a lifetime in OH until moving to So Cal 10 yrs ago to take care of my dearest dad when he was dying and then my mom. I can say that it was blaringly obvious to me that the work ethic in CA (and I include other parts of the West Coast as well) is significantly different compared to back east. Maybe if she were a Picasso or a Cezanne but come on! You have to have a soul to be a real artist. Her drawings are as flat and one-dimensional as she is. Oh and just like another aspect of her personality, they’re copies. They’re not even original. And how is being an “artist” a mitigating factor? Is her art bringing joy to the world? Hardly!

I just finished watching Croaker Queen from today… I fast forwarded through most of Wurm’s opening, “eh, a a a laaaaadies aaaaaaennnd gentlllllllllllleaaaan…”

Thanks to HJ, I had a list of the mitigating factors… Those 8 factors made a very pathetic statement of a useless life. Tried to better herself? What? She used men to “improve” herself!!!!! PPL? What? That was merely her version of a single bar! Her “artwork”? Er, em… How about traced and colored work! Abused and abandoned? Huh? Nuff about that!

I used quite a few Kleenex listening to Samantha and Stephen… My God, the pain on their faces and in their words… They are remarkably strong and loving! I’m in awe of their courage…. I pray that they get satisfaction at the end of this trial. They will forever live with their loss and pain, but I hope all of them find a way to be happy again, they deserve to have peace.

JA was too much for me today, I couldn’t even stand to look at her… Although I did take pleasure in the fact that she looked like someone beat her hard with the fugly stick!. She had the nerve to sit there and act all pathetic and weak in her little lowered chair… When last night she able to cheerfully tweet that “My new DV T-shirts are in!”

So sad to see how the besties lost their “buddyship” – I bet JA didn’t take Jen’s attempt to “break up” very well… (Clearly Jen Jen forgot what happens when people dare to break up with JA!) Did Jen Jen take away Jo Jo’s itty bitty pencils and paper today? Maybe the MS told the DT what juror 8 said last night?

Any definative word on why court was canceled for the afternoon?

    • Kristy
      05/16/2013 at 10:36 pm

I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out. Jodi got her attorneys to stall stall stall so the stark comparisons between mitigating witnesses wouldn’t be on the same day as well as a hope that the jurors would forget the powerful statements by Travis’s siblings. Of course, Jodi believes that the statements she’ll now have her witnesses craft will beat those. The narcissistic that she is, she’ll think her witnesses will trump Travis’s siblings.

I don’t think the judge (regardless of how lenient she has been) would agree to cancel court today, without a very good reason- Juan would certainly have argued fiercly if she did. And I think the DT is done doing JA’s dirty work. It may have had to do with a motion filed earlier by the defense re: a State’s witness- DT filed a motion to preclude them, siting failure to provide enough notice. No matter, the jurors will have aaaaaallllll weekend to ruminate the VIS… That won’t work in JA’s favor IMO.

      Very true & poignant.
This is 5 years after the horror and it seemed like last month to them. Stephen’s own crisis of identity and his marriage and the hold of the killing was so vivid one wanted to look away. How was that for a response? How a killing of their loved and needed one caused havoc for those remaining particularly in light of the fact that HE was the one who could mend wounds and help heal a group of siblings.Samantha’s knowing and deep understanding of the price paid to the mind and heart of their grandmother was just as vivid.
Finally, the editor/director of the camera views mostly kept it where it belonged.

Are people legally limited as to what they can say in an impact statement? Were they not allowed to say Travis was absolutely NOT attracted to children, deny specifics brought up in trial? Were they not allowed to speak to Stabby? Were they not allowed to mention her specifically? I still am in awe of them. I would have reenacted the victim impact statement at Jeffrey Dahmers trial. I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU MOTHER FUCKER. I HATE YOU…

    • Kristy
      05/16/2013 at 10:43 pm

I believe they are limited to what was introduced in trial. They are not there as witnesses to the case, which has a verdict, but rather to indicate what the crime has done to the family. Of course that may vary by state. My family made an impact statement, that sent to the judge in a letter, but did cause the dependent to get the max sentence.

“And having her “art” as a mitigating factor is just pathetic. Let’s give all athlete rapists a pass too because hey, they’re talented. Let’s give all athlete rapislts a pass too because hey, they’re talented athletes.

IMHO,its not the choice of the word “athlete” that reads out of place in this thought; it’s uae ofthe word”talented.”
Whatever the crime, I can imagine a person being very gifted in one area of skill or expression and the very commitment to that interest could be mitigating factor because of what flows from that talent in myriad ways.

Such is not the case with wobo. By a looooong shot.

    • Kristy
      05/16/2013 at 11:40 pm

I don’t see how that will get any play since Jodi didn’t really indicate that she’d made a dime off of artwork prior to murdering Travis. She was focused on her waitressing. Shoot, I waitressed getting through college, which took me longer than most. But, if she was still waitressing at 27 and didn’t have any art shows or have any actual prospects, she’s not an artist. Shoot, she was indicating that she was hoping to have her work shown at a gallery that had master works. Gallery’s don’t have master works of art. I laughed at her narcissism over that one during trial.

  53. ringadingding

Here’s hoping they break out loads of “artwork” on Monday. I’m really not a DP proponent, but I think such a sentence would be doing America a favor if it means this effrontery against art will come to an end.

Seriously though, after reading and thinking about all the things Syn has posted, I’ve come to believe that JA’s photography was her way to study facial expressions to add to her toolbox of human clipart so she could call it up and paste it on her own face when needed, or to simply study so that she could try to imagine an internal landscape to accompany the expressions. I think she even said in one of her interviews that what drew her to photography were people’s faces captured in moments of emotion, which is why she liked taking pictures of weddings. And, now that I think about it…murder. Those are both such compelling emotional extremes she captured–life and death.

I have no idea what need the drawing satisfies for her, as none of it is original. I guess it’s another form of mimicry, just like the photography.

well I agree–mostly with the hesitation of thinking how a Dr Phi can weasel himself into becoming the new Meyer Shapiro or Clement Greenberg! As a rule, most people have been shown to prefer a painting for its calm views of nature. The “masses” or the “experts” aren’t always “right” in terms of what lasts. There is a standard used to describe “an artist” and it simply does not–even in elastic tights – cover thge wobo.

Sadly, the interview was edited which could have cut off other info that could be more damning at this point. Hopefully, Juan will point out the inconsistencies. Ironic that Jodi’s putting forth this effort, given her post trial antics. I think her antics like the cross of Deanna, were to rattle and get folks to do something they shouldn’t have done. Jodi is looking to cause jury issues. We all know this, and so does the jury at this point. No one is surprised by her crap at this point and expects it. The jury has proven that they are no ones patsy.

I would rather Juan indicates that narcissistic Jodi chose to spend her time with a camera crew than with her mother that has been in the courtroom for her. Then I’d like him to play the tape of her so chill talking about the verdict.

Of course, the flip side is that Jodi’s team uses that to indicate she’s got mental defect.

I think the interview was a trap for the prosecution. Juan has not fallen prey to her tactics yet, and doubt he will.

      • Kristy
        05/17/2013 at 12:56 am

I think that Jodi has tried to use the media to trap Juan. He’s been to smart to fall into that. He had his game plan before trial, and wasn’t going to get side tracked by any of her BS once the trial started., Juan has kept to the KISS principle, Keep it Simple Stupid. He’s used less is more. The only time he took his time, was during cross with Jodi, because he knew she’d contradict herself and lie. She was a sitting duck during cross. She really thought she could beat Juan…. She should use that as her incompetent plea!

Juan will be able to impeach Porhead Patty, right? She may change her mind about getting on the stand when she sees all the twitter posts as well as blog posts. Another thing I just thought of is that maybe hodi’s mother isn’t getting on the stand is because she tried to sell the phony pedophile letters to the enquirer and they’re afraid Juan will bring this up.

      • Kristy
        05/17/2013 at 12:34 am

This is where Jodi is impeaching her defense. Juan wanted to bring the letters in to discredit Jodi with her lying. WOBOS is trying to have it both ways. Getting fraudulent letters in, but the allowing her lawyers to fight to keep them out. Basically she damned them either way. Put in evidence already disproved, or claim incompetence over the admission. She put them in a double bind.

And why do you have a problem with tattoos? My daughter, a nationally known skeptic, the author of numerous articles on the subject, her blog averaging 1200 hits a week, has tattoos. To clarify – what I saw at Chris Stark’s twitter page was that someone who tweeted Chris had a derogatory comment about tats and Chris’ response was that tattoos were NOT the issue at all. The issue was that Patti came to court today wearing Daisy Duke short shorts with a skimpy top and that her attire was not appropriate for court!

A death penalty sentence is not really based on the jury’s discretion as much as you may think. The decision is more of a formula the jury has to follow. They’ve decided it’s cruel, now they will weigh mitigation factors. Basically they will calculate the enormity of Travis’ loss, minus the mitigation factors [Jodi never been convicted of a crime prior, etc.]. If they weigh that all separately the jury is almost forced to sentenced her to death.

I’ve not been able to stop thinking about Steven and Samantha Alexander’s words yesterday. Its been on my mind constantly, replaying in my head. I hope the jury is feeling the same thing that I am. After months of listening to cowards spewing garbage, lies and filth about a man who was not alive to defend himself, it was comforting to finally hear someone say out loud who he really was without anyone interrupting or objecting. I wonder how many jurors wished they could have put their arms around Steven while he spoke of his life since this tragedy. I hope that Dr Samuels was watching yesterday so he could get a lesson in what real PTSD is.

    Donchais University.
    Like it.

Robert – I owe you a MASSIVE apology and I’m really sorry. I could list a bunch of excuses but they don’t matter. I realized this as soon as I shut off my computer soooooooooooo

ROBERT and DONCHAIS – pay attention. 😯

While many are ready to criticize and write letters for various causes I’m a firm believer that letter of praise or credit should always be given when due as well and I didn’t this time.

THE DONCHAIS UNIVERSITY was so named at the suggestion of Robert exits Rotterdam (and is apparently floating somewhere in the universe) and as such should be given the credit!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was his idea and the sandbox ran with it. All were in agreement with not a nay to be heard. Basically it was done by acclamation and deservedly so!!!

So congrats to Donchais for creating this university and Robert for suggesting that we had all learned so much that we have outgrown a school!!!!!! 😀

I am now putting myself in the naughty corner for my transgression ➡ ➡ 😦

Nahhh..No way.. knowwhatImsaying? When folks build schools, they have a vision and the “I” is very comfortable placed well behind the “we.” Its what people feel in an orchestra or in a laboratory or in play or on a sports team. When one “really” appreciates, and is committed to, a value or an idea, one wants to be a part of bringing it to fruition. Except for poets, novelists, composers, and others who must work alone, many people get their greatest satisfaction being part of a “team” who performs well.

also, as a side note, I realized that I was floating in mapspace and was “in” and “exiting” Rotterdam when I mentioned “Eastern Europe”: as part of the members of the university. I should have written, “Western Europe.” Dopey knowwhatImean? However if anyone reading this IS from eastern Europe, chime in.

    Jay :
Criminal record for what? Possession? Big deal.
And why do you have a problem with tattoos? My daughter, a nationally known skeptic, the author of numerous articles on the subject, her blog averaging 1200 hits a week, has tattoos. My son-in-law, a twice nominated Academy Award film editor, has tattoos. My bartender, a brilliant woman who speaks four languages and pours a world class martini, has them too.

Jay, what do you mean by “big deal” for possession? It is a big deal! Possession of drugs are a huge deal and shows someone’s character and who they are.

anyones daughter, son in law or bartender with any class would try their darndest to cover their tattoos up in court. Tattoos are a personal decision, but should be covered at times to show respect.

      05/17/2013 at 3:55 pm

I remember speaking with a woman, working as a caregiver for my mother in her last days, who was raising her kids herself and working long hours. She said her daughter -I dunno now, 13yrs, 15yrs, whatever – was caught with a joint in a town with “zero tolerance.” What that meant was her record was now marked; no chance for aid for schooling, bad options for work, kicked off teams the list goes on. I thought then–turn of this century- that the country’s “war on drugs” was a hopeless, invasive, and counterproductive effort that mirrored a “war against alcohol” from the early part of the century. When vast numbers of people want something, they will get it. If censored or prohibited, someone else (organized crime usually) fills the gap and they will get it. This lends itself to enormous, incalculable corruption.

I dont have a problem with a general policy of those under 18 years of age being prohibited from what they can buy themselves; but I dont have a problem with parents being the ones who handle any misuse of drugs or alcohol or tobacco.

So with wobo I always thought the interesting thing was that the parents–as a response–called on the police to “handle” it. Maybe it wasn’t the first time. The caregiver I mentioned earlier would have never called the police on a family matter like that.

I think theft and animal cruelty and bullying and lying are all more worthy of attention than the use of personal stimulants.” But thats just me,” as a younger brother of mine oftentimes adds to such a comment.

    Robert exits Rotterdam :
The “masses” or the “experts” aren’t always “right” in terms of what lasts. There is a standard used to describe “an artist” and it simply does not–even in elastic tights – cover thge wobo.

Right on, Robert. It’s offensive. I hold an MFA, though not in visual arts. What appears to a lay person to be great is often derivative work. It has a familiarity to it that makes the beholder think it’s good. At least she doesn’t create velvet paintings of cigar smoking dogs…yet.

    • Jay
      05/17/2013 at 11:50 am

Her work is only offensive in the context of the hate fest for her. If she wasn’t Arias the murderer her drawings and paintings would be OK… pedestrian, and superficial, but better then the majority of people could produce.

And that’s probably how the jury will perceive her ‘art’ if they’re asked to consider it in mitigation against the death penalty. And a juror who may be looking for a factor to recommend LWOP would look at it and say, yeah, she has drawing talent, hence she’s an artist.

      • ringadingding

        05/17/2013 at 4:23 pm

Jay–the term used was a “talented artist.” as a mitigating factor in a capital case. I think for ringading its not on the level of can she count?Or draw? or sing? Thats not the issue; it is that she is a “talented artist” and, by any definition of that term used within the past 3 centuries, such a notion seems on its face, absurd.

To equate envelope drawings from the wandering psycho, to that term is unjustified, disingenuous, wildly inaccurate and is using “artist” in a pejorative way- sort of like, well “everyone” is an artist, which I think is a new form of ‘defining deviancy down’ in Senator Moynihans vivid phrase.

That’s a great point. I’m a little surprised, to be honest, to see evidence of a disordered mind. I was under the impression she was well-organized. No wonder she did such a poor job of covering her tracks to AZ.

      • 05/17/2013 at 10:59 am

ringading.. she ain’t organised sweety.. unless given a heap of time to pre-plan so she can appear to be… even she admitted that to the femaile detective in those interrogation vids. She doesn’t have the concentration.. which is why the camera went into the washing machine… and why all that evidence was left at the scene…. it was only going to be organised scene IF everything went according to HER plan.

The end result was as disorganised as it gets apart from the returning Travis to the shower where he was “supposed” to die.

Anything outside of it spells utter chaos. Think about the ninja story… that ain’t organised honeypie….. think about the comparison of characters joidistein to the Hannibal.. now hannibal lecter IS organised, Jodistein = utter chaos in comparison. 😀 she tries to give the impression of organised.. hence Ryan’s testimony of why he was interested in her… he perceived her as an enterpeneur and all sorts…. so you are right on that level.. she certainly tries to portray herself that way. It’s part of our dark fascination with her, the dichotomy reflected in so much of who she is….. she’s organised in motivation.. EXTREMELY in a very convoluted yet shallow thinking way…- many underestimate that facet because in actual behaviour she’s an absolute wreck!

The stories were so real, I’ve lived them. The whole losing a family member that was “the glue” of the family, and how it shatters the rest just broke my heart today. The pain they feel was palpable in how raw it still feels at his point.

I’ve lived the story too, but not because of murder, thank God. I think what broke my heart the most and started the tears falling was when Stephen talked about the nicknames he and Travis called each other. It really brought home that special, deep relationship between siblings. It’s like losing a part of yourself when you lose a sibling.

Does anyone think it’s possible that yesterday afternoon’s fiasco was the HO, saying she wants to forego the mitigation phase? Is it possible she told the judge just forget it? I heard that in the state of AZ, the criminal can choose not to go through with this phase, and given she has stated on TV that she wanted dp, then why go through with this phase? Would there have to be a motion to not proceed with this phase?

Oh my gosh..how truly emotional to watch the families after the verdict. They might have got some justice from the system, but their lives are forever ruined. No one could continue living a normal life ever again after what happened to their babies. They will suffer here on earth every waking moment until they die. This isn’t something you can ever move on from or put out of your mind..even for a moment. …They will be haunted with the images of their child being brutally and barbarically raped and murdered forever.
I’m so sad and my heart is aching hard for them. Poor, dear family.

Good morning, day and night all!

I am posting the link to the court minutes (aka all of the “crap motions that have been DENIED”)

    http://www.courtminutes.maricopa.gov/docs/Criminal/052013/m5770706.pdf

Watching all of the vid coverage of the trial yesterday left me feeling deeply sad… Samantha and Steven were heartbreaking, and awe inspiring all at once. Tangible pain, and overwhelming love poured out from five long years….

Of course the 8 mitigating factors were composed by JA and not her attorney’s… Only JA believes her “art” is SO important! What… The world NEEDS her art, so let’s not put the “master” to death? (Oh, yeah, I forgot…she had a friend that owned a gallery, and offered to hang her work next to Monet, Van Gogh and Gauguin! Riiiiiiiiight!)

The ONLY people willing to fight for her life are an ex that was dumped, and still has JA koolaid coursing through his veins, and a childhood friend who has her own shit life. Where is her “dumb sister”, why isn’t she begging to have her sister’s life spared? Grammy? Brother? “Bueller… Ferris Bueller…anyone…”?

I heard Jenkasauruuus say the DT should argue that JA would be beneficial to the prison pop because she is “self educated” and had a large vocabulary!!!! And she could teach fellow inmates to read!!!! Aawwww Gaaaawd! Just what we need, a slue of ignorant felons de-edifying the English language!

    • 05/17/2013 at 4:15 pm

Hey FOL… soz was busy bawling my eyes out over here.. oh yeah… JA should teach inmates how to be manipulative.. do these idiots even think about the words that come out of their mouth???? good one! whoever this jenkasaurus is.. she needs to go the same way as the rest of the dinosaurs… to extinction!

“.. a childhood friend who has her own shit life.”

What’s wrong with you? Why are you making those kind of vitriolic hateful statements about someone you don’t know at all? Is it any wonder she doesn’t want any more graphics showing her face in the media with people like you stirring up hatred for her and her ‘shit life?’

You should be ashamed of yourself…

        05/17/2013 at 5:52 pm

Jay, sorry to offend you… But in my life experience someone who stoops to heroin to cope, has a shit life. Further, I based my opinion on how she appeared in court yesterday. IMO, she was clothed in a very disrespectful manner, wearing shorts and a T-shirt that showed her bra strap. Patty was also seen giggling and smiling with JA’s Mom during a very serious phase of this trial, afterall, her buddy is facing the DP… Not sure what she found to smile about?

I’m not the least bit ashamed of myself.

Really… It’s time to get some perspective.
Arias is going away for life, and she’s not getting out.
It’s a done deal. The site is Calls For Justice… not Venting For Justice.
Where’s the justice in perpetual bad mouthing someone like Patti Womack?

I belong to a local chapter of one of the major international Community Service Organizations. One of the volunteer tasks we do here in LA is work with young people who have drug and/or alcohol addiction problems. Their lives are often a mess. Some are still in rehab. Or on parole. Or in outpatient mental programs. We take them to baseball games, or to movies, or fishing. We don’t tell them their lives are shit because they fell into a legal or marriage or employment hole.

If Patti Womack believes Jodi Arias was indeed a good friend to her and truthfully want’s to testify in her behalf, she should be able to do that without getting a lot of abuse from the Harpies From Hell Patrol. And if she wants to show her tattoos in court she doesn’t need sanctimonious criticism about it — nobody’s criticizing Juror #10 for his tattoo, plainly evident in court from the juror descriptions on HLN.

    • Jill
      05/17/2013 at 7:20 pm

    Robert exits Rotterdam :

    Gracias, Robert. 🙂

That is why this is interesting, IMO! Galanter is a real media-hog. No doubt he got in this years ago for the attention. He is capable, for sure, but one does have to wonder about whther he cared more for his own future, or that of OJ.

From Andrea Lynne @Sissylaw on 05/17/2013
A member of The State vs Jodi Arias ~ Travis Alexander murder trial/Facebook

Concerning Donovan Bering’s Probation and attending the Jodi Arias Trial:

Okay everyone, I just got off the phone with the Superior Court Probation Service Center 245 N Centennial Way Mesa, AZ 85201 and with Karen. Asked if probation there in AZ was the same as it was here in TX, “yes” she told me and then looked up the Court docs for Donavan M Bering DOB 10/24/1962, who is found to be a convicted felon, paying back restitution in the amount of $190.734.59 payable at $100 a month, was sitting everyday in court for the AZ vs Jodi Arias trial and that is against her probation rules. Karen said “yes it is”. Said to me Donavan is in the notes of her probation officer who knows this, and Donavan was NOT in court yesterday, as I thought due to enraging her probation officer to do that. Donavan also asked her probation officer for a “travel voucher”, and she was denied that request to travel. I have her probation officer’s name and cell phone, and I will keep her updated to the ways of which Donavan, is not keeping herself within the rules and confines of her probation. BTW…..Donvavan is now going to go before the court for the Arias trial watching in the gallery, and the phone calls to a convicted felon aka Jodi Arias to get what she wants to tweet for Jodi a convicted felon Donavan cannot be in contact with that violates her 5 yr probation.

Hope what I have done makes you all happy, it did me.

    • nyccowgirl
      05/17/2013 at 7:09 pm

Bravo! Thanks, but I’m confused about the end…so she can watch in the gallery or she is going to go to court to petition to do so?

      • ringadingding
        05/17/2013 at 7:13 pm

It sounds as though she’s having to go before the court to address these acts of probation violation (court watching in the gallery, phone calls to a felon).

      • Janna
        05/17/2013 at 7:18 pm

Bering is going to appear in court for 2 specific probation violations:

        (1) Watching the Arias Trial from inside the court gallery, and
        (2) Making phone calls to a convicted felon aka Arias
        (3) Tweeting for a convicted felon

Donavan could lose her freedom for these serious violations! Just sayin’

      • HJ Madison
        05/17/2013 at 8:26 pm

Hello NYC: Son of Sam has kicked in and she can continue to sell her art and shirts. If her art were inspired by the killing, or had something to do with the killing, it would be prevented. But, just because she is a felon does not prevent her from sending her pictures to whomever …. and they are being sold. This is why the Alexanders filed the Wrongful Death suit. In this way, should they prevail, ANY monies she obtains will be channeled to them. They will certainly win with this criminal conviction.

      • truejustice
        05/18/2013 at 12:35 am

HJ.. Arizona has a modified version of the son of sam law.

The judge can restrict her artwork sales at time of sentencing .,, and with the civil suit the family or lawyers can look at these same posts and make her pay back any money she has earned … even if she has already spent it. Once she is prison … even the money she can spend on a weekly basis in very limited.

However, for me, unlike Dexter or BreakingBad, TheShield, or SOA, it lacks a visceral sense of reality; At times I think I’m watching a movie where the all the characters are also acting in a Clint Eastwood homage movie, rather than acting life. Some of the pairings and lines struck me as a combo of All My Children, Murder, She Wrote and Dirty Harry.

    BRAZEN ESCAPE FROM ARIZONA PRISON
    (Phoenix)

Jodi Arias, serving a life sentence for the murder of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander, was rescued briefly on Monday by a chartered helicopter that hovered over the general population’s recreation yard. The helicopter, chartered by a man who gave the initials on his rental form as MM, dropped a ladder into the “yard”, and Arias, who wasn’t supposed to be in the yard at that time, ran to the waiting aircraft, clutched the rope, and the Helicopter began to ascend.

Further investigation revealed that Arias had complained of a migraine during her arts and crafts class and that the responding prison guard, in the process of transferring Miss Arias to the infirmiry, was found with their head nearly severed from their body and that Arias had stolen the officers keys and let herself into the yard and to the awaiting Helicopter.

The plan, however, went wrong as the Helicopter refused to gain enough altitude to clear the walls of the prison. It is thought the second suspect in the Chopperjacking, described as a swarthier version of Jabba the Hut, whose name on the rental application is Bering, brought the craft down due to it’s weight…

The civil suit. That in itself will not be enuff to shut that shit down. As OJ said many years ago, “It’s a cat and mouse game.” There will be a judgment for the plaintiffs, lets say for ten million dollars. Trying to pin down all the shady characters involved will be near impossible. Once a year the Alexander’s lawyer will proffer interrogatories: Documents, tax returns, bank account statements, etc, to find out where the money is going. It’ll be hard, if not impossible, for the family to pin down. The Goldman’s attorney in this process is David Cook, a junkyard dog with a long leash. His website is bloodfromaturnip.com. I’m sure he’s on The Case.

The good thing about a civil suit is that they will be able to depose many people. And then can slam many of them for perjury.I think it was Alan Dershowitz that said a Civil Suit is more a search for the truth than a criminhal case. Hard to lie in a civil suit when you might have to answer a few hundred questions about the same thing. Eventually someone screws up.

She simply needs to be Put Away, on death row, after this bullshit. Out of sight, out of mind.

    Harry Blanshard Wood :

Wow Harry! This has the ring of truth and how her mind may work. I’m a believer. I sure hope she does testify so we can enjoy Juan Cx’ing her for the last time!

so if she gets the DP, what does the automatic appeal entail? Is it a guaranty of a new trial?? The appeal could be denied, correct?

    Ho Moon,
There is one automatic appeal with DP. It isn’t a new trial. If the grounds for appeal r denied once reviewed, all subsequent appeals that she would want to file r on her. She will need to cover costs unless someone would want to take it on. The State pays for the automatic appeal. The appeal can be denied once the appeal documents r reviewed and there is a determination of whether there is any merit to the grounds for appeal.

      Lisa….

So first we wait for sentence… IF DP.. we then take bets on her “grounds” of first appeal?.. and who her attorney/s might be.

Thinking that will be end of The Nurmster, he’d have long scurried off to his dark dank hole by then if his withdrawal motions are genuine…. so maybe she’ll attack him for making her lose. She must have needed him for a reason and that’s as good a one as I can come up with!! 😛

I’m sure this has already been discussed but what is the consensus on whether or not Juan will show JA’s Fox interview during the penalty phase? I’m not thinking about the comments she made re: the DP but the new accusation she made about Travis and other comments she made blaming everyone but herself? I really hope he is able to show that interview to prove how remorseless, manipulative and vindictive she is. But I’m not sure if its allowed.

      05/18/2013 at 9:56 am

One more question: I think I heard on HLN that she gets a choice as to whether she takes the stand or speaks directly to the jury the way the Alexanders did. Is this right? It doesn’t sound right. Why would she get a choice?

      • 05/18/2013 at 10:29 am

LisaM .. yes I think Ritanita (or HJ?) said this couple days ago. I’m sorry I forget who it was but yes they did say she gets a choice. Interestingly pretty sure Nurmi says “you will hear testimony about her talking about her life” paraphrasing.. whether that was a blanket statement or indication of her choice I don’t know.

A normal person would choose a statement so as to avoid cross with Juan again.. but her and her narcissistic need to spar with him… who knows she’d probably relish that little game.

I’m not sure what the difference is either.. would love to have that qualified. Thinking the statement might be more restrictive to content. Another reason she might opt for the testimony… you know how she likes to keep up the slaughter through character assassination and make everyone suffer it.

Just surmising at this point cos I really don’t have a clear idea of the differences.

  151. 05/18/2013 at 10:21 am

Hellooo to anyone that’s around. 😀 **waves**

i watched the new 48 hours online thanks for the alert that it was shown.

I really like it points out there are definitely things in that ninja story that are true. I’ve always thought the ninja story very important for that very reason… I reckon between what was said about the ninjas on that original 48 hours and what she told Det Flores once she finally stopped the “I was never there” cr@p, she probably tells most of the real story.

The problem being, with her movie embellishments and outright lies being stirred into the mix… how does one ever decipher it?

Over in the School of Behavioral Sciences, Professor SYNTARA has often spoken of how the psychopath is not restricted by prison bars. CEO’s and politicos have their share. In yesterday’s NY Times:

“…. Fred Eckert, a onetime Goldman Sachs partner who soared as a star in “vulture” investing in ailing companies. But in the turmoil of the financial crisis, his business and wealth came crashing down. By 2011, he was bankrupt, divorced and, for two months, in a coma.
His excesses were once the talk of Wall Street. For a lunch in 1993, he ordered a $6 Reuben sandwich —made with corned beef,Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and dressing — with a $120 bottle of Corton-Charlemagne Burgundy.“The waitress said it was the greatest disparity she had ever seen between the price of the entree and the price of the beverage.;…”

What stuck out for me, when reading some of the comments, was how they seems to describe ways the wobo has been described in the sandbox. A sampling:

-I am stunned by this man’s utterly parasitical life.

-I need to find my tiny violin…

-So Mr Crazy wants his former life back.

-Perhaps people who know him will fund him but I wouldn’t touch him with a barge pole.

-“That year, he left his second wife and three sons to move into a $65,000-a-month suite in the Towers at the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan with a flight attendant from GSC’s Gulfstream IV corporate jet.”This one sentence says it all.

-There is nothing newsworthy about Eckert. His life is a cautionary tale of greed that should invite only scorn. This story should never have seen the light of day.

–Mr. Eckart is certainly a prime example of what is wrong with wall st community. So little shame after all the havoc he wreaked financially. He will temper his excesses only so he can continue to feed his greed and his ego. I only hope there is no third act for this man, but thanks to the nyt for telling it like it is in the financial center.

    -One sick puppy.

-Typical. He lives well beyond his means, takes egregious risks, and shows bad judgement in most areas of life. And he believes this qualifies him to manage other peoples’ money.
Luckily for him, there are some who are even more delusional and so he will find investors.

I mean, doesn’t this sound like a suit version of the wobo?

ps-MMD, write to the provost and see if a course can be started in the “School of Business” titled “Is it possible to be ethical and a capitalist?” Reading material, of course, should include Adam Smith’s “Wealth of Nations” (pub 1776), but also his earlier work “The Theory of Moral Sentiments” (pub 1759)- which usually no Ayn Rand enthusiast – has ever read and which no psychopath could understand since it’s “theory” is one of empathy.

Ok! Have a good day all. Caught up on reading; can’t answer any legal question with surety.Back to homework!

The original cato had an ideology and would – and did – kill himself before he’d lie or change sides. Love em or hate em that Cato had integrity.
The modern version- has to be kato – since parasitic house guests who equivocate about seeing a murderer- dont have integrity.

Here’s a funny thing: I wrote a rather voluminous book on the Simpson saga a few years ago. At one point Random House was interested, but then the recession hit and I had to join the ARMY, and the book kind of fell away. Every time I thought the thing was finished, something new happened. I finished the Vegas burglary and the sentencing. And there it sat collecting dust. Until now. This, I think, is the last chapter.

very interesting. I attended one day at the court, knew the case inside out. Thought Schiller book “American Tragedy” best account of it in book form. i used to drive friends who visited to Rockingham and Bundy and th eplace on San Vicente where Nicoll had her last meal. Even showing anyone the 405 Hwy evokes sights of him driving away. Seeing shots of people clapping at his acquittal has always bothered me, but I understand it.

Yeah, AT was a good book. One of the main sources was Rbt Kardashian. Which was the big break-up with OJ. Kardashian dished on the polygraph, which was a major revelation.

The state was at a serious disadvantage against the professional media machine and performance art of the OJ defense. The DT thrived onstage, they were bred for it. The prosecution was just too easily thrown off balance. The judge did not help. It was sad and frustrating to watch. Juan’s a different breed….maybe a sign of the times (I hope?) that at least some state prosecutors are able to shake off the distractions and plow through the theatrics.

Like everything its a case of standards. I mean I read the police interview with Simpson when he came without a lawyer, 24 hours after the killing with cuts on his hands(from a ‘broken glass”) and they couldn’t nail him. If there is a tradition of honor and prestige in a DA office, the office will have good committed lawyers; if not, not. I think they are improving. DA Jackson in the Spector case I thought had good potential. But “govenment service’ has traditionally (not so much anymore, but still) meant a temperament of embracing “psychic income” as something with its own number and value.”Money income” is needed as well of course, but many people – choose to balance the equation. The Juanster strikes me as one of those. The way names like “Hogan” and “Morgenthau” set standards in the US Attorney office in NYC for so long. Los Angeles not on the same level I dont think.

It’s a chunk to read. 700 pages or something, but worth it. Every big case eventually gets its “one book” to read. Same author wrote one on Jon Benet case, but it was not as thorough or inside on the story. That case a great misuse of law enforcement and judiciary; mediocrity again.

One nugget to keep in mind: TIME magazine pictured Simpson twice on its cover. With very different shades of black or darkness on his skin. So with NEWSWEEK. He was “light skinned” goofy OJ who was in Avis commercials and was a Heisman winner and the “dark, black” OJ who killed his wife by slicing her throat and stabbed her friend 25 times or so.
It arrived at the post Rodney King video& the broad introduction to court steaming on the TV and to what DNA is. It had elements of “Othello” in bold letters-only the dark warrior who was in love with his white wife was driven by different notions of ‘loving not wisely but too well’
