Jodi Arias Murder Trial – Jury Decides On A Sentence!

05/23/2013

Screen shot 2013-05-23 at 7.23.46 PMAfter five grueling months filled with lies, innuendo, sex, and violence, the very dedicated jury has reached a decision!

Judge on bench…Verdict reached.

No unanimous verdict!

I’m dumbfounded.

The family devastated as is Juan.

Retrial with new jury on July 18th.

How the hell could they be hung?

16.Maureen-Red haired, glasses (the red might be too red to be a natural ginger) If I had to guess one Mormon on the jury, it would be her.
She took a lot of notes and had a “polished” look to her. She had her whole body turned facing Jodi. I barely saw her look at JM.

Come on everyone — we have no idea what happened in the jury room – stop calling them names. When they see what she has done over the past couple of weeks they will think differently — but that’s just how the system, such as it is, works. Sad state of affairs.

    • ringadingding
      05/23/2013 at 7:38 pm

It was their duty to reach a decision. Basic math. This is a disaster.

It was their duty — but they couldn’t. No wonder everyone tries to get out of jury duty – you can’t win. If they had come back with life what would everyone be saying??? Same thing???????

      05/23/2013 at 8:26 pm

sorry, i can give them oodles of credit for getting the first two stages right, but they turned in to cowards during this stage. If there were up to 3 that couldn’t agree, then that should have been explained to judge and alternates go in. They had the DUTY to try this phase, and they answered that they could. The voicesfor the Alexander’s in this phase .. well i want to believe they did evthing in their power to show that there is no effing way that the mitigators out weighted the aggrivators. they quit on the family. they quit on Juan. They quit on themselves.

      • 05/23/2013 at 9:14 pm

You are 100% correct! The next jury will have the benefit of seeing all these interviews b/c JM can introduce them. This cocky slut will die, eventually. I feel for the Alexander family. There isn’t enough money in the world to help them feel better. The jury chickened out or at least one. In almost every state there is no checkmark for “deadlocked” and they poll the jury and you know right then who went for life and who went for death.

  9. Debra
    05/23/2013 at 7:38 pm

      • CC ...
        05/23/2013 at 7:45 pm

And yet … That is what appears happened. Obviously, those going for DP didn’t give in either. And again, seems like or or some cared more about the skank than Travis’s family….who were the epitome of class in the courtroom…. The antithesis of the OTHER family.
        Unbelievable!

    • 05/23/2013 at 9:17 pm

Yes. They would have been able to use an alternate IF there was one hold out “say for death so 11 to 1 for death and that juror says “I can’t do it morally”…..guess that didn;t happen

  14. ringadingding
    05/23/2013 at 7:40 pm

This means that someone actually believed the mitigating factors outweighed the aggravating factors. Un-effing-believable.

Yes, but wouldn’t they have had to justify it by mitigating factors? If I were on that jury, I would have demanded that at the very least or no signy signy on any non-verdict. I am very patient.

You know, never, ever have I seen or heard of a judge getting emotional, unless it was outrage. I hope she disqualifies herself next time. Something is very, very wrong here.

    • Lisa M
      05/23/2013 at 7:52 pm

HJ I missed the judge crying. WTH? Did she seem to be crying in relief or frustration?

    • GN5020
      05/23/2013 at 8:52 pm

I am SO disappointed — for the Alexander family specifically — but because I saw how emotional the judge is, IF the next jury either comes back with Life or Not Unanimous, it goes to Judge Stephens, and from her emotional reaction I feel certain she would give her LWOP, not Life, and that’s good enough for me. The important thing is that she was found Guilty of 1st Degree Murder with Aggravation, which can’t be taken back. As much as I have watched the whole thing, perhaps it would be better and faster (and less costly for the people of AZ) if the retrial of the penalty phase is held without cameras so the next 12 people can quickly base their decision on the jury instructions alone. Does anyone know if she will be allowed to get new attorneys and put on different mitigation factors and witnesses? And, can JM show her recent TV interviews?

      • Lisa M
        05/23/2013 at 9:33 pm

So you think she was crying because she was upset over the verdict? BTW hello, GN5020!

  18. NancyB
    05/23/2013 at 7:41 pm

Donchais, What’s your opinion on the following?

I spoke with a friend of my husband’s last night, who was a criminal trial attorney for 25 yrs. He told me that a new jury would be vastly more likely NOT to vote for death, as they are not personally committed to the verdicts of 1st degree in the guilt phase along with the cruelty verdict and have not had the experience of watching and hearing from JA for 5 months and realizing just how cold she is. Soooo, I’m just not sure what to think. Pleeease tell me that he’s not correct!

    • Lisa M
      05/23/2013 at 7:54 pm

I just heard some lawyers say on CNN that all JA’s interviews would now be fair game. That they can be shown. If that’s the case, those interviews may just come back to bite her in the butt.

  19. 05/23/2013 at 7:41 pm

    Why is she crying?

    • 05/23/2013 at 7:50 pm

because the trial is over and she has to go back to her cell and no more make-up and smiley wiley interviews! Pooor jodistein!!!

      • Lisa M
        05/23/2013 at 7:55 pm

But that doesn’t make sense Syn. Doesn’t she get to go back to population in the jail? Do u mean she has to go back to the same cell she’s been in recently? I certainly hope that’s the case.

Personally, I think she thought the jurors would compromise and settle on life. Now she knows death is still a possibility. I can only hope so.

This is unbearably sad and infuriating. How did the Alexander family refrain from standing up and shouting in disbelief? Whoever the holdout was, that person LIED about being able to give a death sentence.

  20. David In TN
    05/23/2013 at 7:42 pm

In most jurisdictions, this would be the end. A sentence of life without parole would be imposed after a hung jury in the penalty phase.

  21. ringadingding
    05/23/2013 at 7:43 pm

That poor family. Is there no end? All their lives…on hold…the personal and financial devastation. Having to see their brother’s murderer again and again and again.

  22. 05/23/2013 at 7:43 pm

  23. Jill
    05/23/2013 at 7:44 pm

Why couldn’t the jury turn in the “holdout” and say they don’t think he/she wasn’t death penalty qualified! That is what it sounds like. Then put in an alternate.

I can’t get wilmot’s smirk (after the verdict was read) out of my mind.

  24. la2la
    05/23/2013 at 7:46 pm

azcentral talking about pressure on JM to give a deal of LWOP. How does one or more juror hold out against dp yet vote for premeditated murder with a cruelty aggravator. I don’t get it. Now a new jury will have to hear ALL the evidence from a 5-month trial??? I hope that if they impanel (sp?) a new jury, that JM uses all those damn interviews. I hope that her mouth sinks her.

    • HJ Madison
      05/23/2013 at 7:54 pm

No …. they must accept the original verdict and the premeditation. Juan will present the gruesome, cold nature. DT this time will HAVE to put on mitigation, because little Jodi by herself will not get it!

      • HJ Madison
        05/23/2013 at 8:00 pm

And now I hear this lawyer??? in AZ saying a new jury will read need to read the transcript …. what?

      • la2la
        05/23/2013 at 8:11 pm

Yes, the first 2 phases are done. What I can’t grasp is how they could be unanimous on the first 2 and deadlock on the last. And now the DA will have to make a decision to go forward or offer a plea. And if it’s forward, how long will Travis’s family have to wait for justice. Just think: new lawyers for ja (possible) that have to get up to speed with the case. New, endless motions. New jury that has to be death-qualified. A jury that has to be familiar with the whole trial transcript because it is all part of the mitigation phase. New possibilities for appeal.

        It’s so damn depressing.

Sentences in all cases with extreme injury or death are difficult. But isn’t that what the voir dire for a death penalty-qualified jury supposed to cover?

    • NancyB
      05/23/2013 at 8:06 pm

It’s why that jury selection is THE most important part of entire process. I just wish that the state could afford the high priced jury consultants that the defense used. To WEED out the jurors who promise under oath that their ethics and morals allow them to vote for a death penalty verdict. Shame on the one or ones who did not have the integrity to abide by their solemn oath! Society has a duty to impose justice and the jury is the embodiment of that duty and in my opinion they failed everyone.

Yes, in jail. They will find a jury either in a new county or by asking the new jury if they can set aside any bias. Jodi, no doubt, thinks she is still winning. However, she was advised NOT to do the interviews for a reason. And THIS is the reason. She may be FORCED to accept a jury that says they are unbiased by press. HA!

    • truejustice
      05/23/2013 at 8:11 pm

County Jail.. If they cant find a tainted jury probably make a deal to just hand to judge
3.. I do not think Arias shot herself in the foot at all. She gave a million interviews essentially making it a very difficult prospect to find another jury – her chances of getting life or natural life increased significantly.

just wait until the jurors start watching all of Jodi’s interviews…I bet the one(s) who voted for life will be kicking themselves for not voting death….once they see Jodi for who she really is….I bet there will be regrets for their decisions

Probably yes …. but I am sure the DT will try to pull out. And, frankly, the judge SHOULD recuse herself for bawling after the verdict. Disgusting!

      • 05/23/2013 at 8:15 pm

As a layperson, I don’t understand what you’re saying…bc she should be impartial? She had DT on such a long rope.

      • HJ Madison
        05/23/2013 at 8:19 pm

DT is VERY sick of this and Jodi does not listen. So, they just want out now … but they must ask. The judge cried, cried when she released the jury. I have NEVER known of a judge who was emotional, ever! Why does she have ANY emotional connection to them? She, of all, is suppose to hold herself impartial. Something STINKS!

        05/23/2013 at 8:51 pm

HJ, is there footage of the judge? I never saw her. Just heard her voice.

HJ, do you mean judge has connection w DT?

    • 05/23/2013 at 8:16 pm

I think the DT will run away.. IF they were genuinely wanting to leave.. IF it was all a ploy.. they will remain. So that will be interesting to see. We will know then just what their true motivations were.

I know money doesn’t mean anything, but I’m going to send a donation to Alexanders just in case it will put an ounce of ease in their minds to know that they will have financial means to get back to Mesa in June and July.
I hope others will too, and then they will not have to worry about this. It’s the only small way that I feel that I can ease anything in their poor minds.

Jill, what a great Idea! I’m in! Was thinking, too, wonder if there’s someone in town who has a rental house they could donate to the Alexanders for as long as it takes…then they wouldn’t have to worry about hotel expenses! I am going into my prayer closet RIGHT NOW and will ask Papa God for strenth, perserverance, peace, grace and hope… especially for Samantha and Stephen…

Glad you’re in! Ty. I always wondered if the hotel was donating the rooms? If not, maybe some of us can use our pull to try to get a hotel to donate the rooms to them. I would make the calls. And the airlines too. That alone must cost a fortune. That’s a great idea about the house. Someone must have a home that they leave for the hot summers of Mesa.

  49. 05/23/2013 at 8:13 pm

    I think…

    1. The Arias’ not being there was to regain media attention no matter what the verdict.

    2. Jodi was disappointed at the no verdict verdict… maybe it didn’t play too well into her plans. Her reaction looked more akin to what you would have thought she would give if it had been DP.

    • truejustice
      05/23/2013 at 8:19 pm

on 2. – Do you think she was so confident she would get the lesser , that she was upset that some of them actually wanted the DP?

      • 05/23/2013 at 8:23 pm

I think it’s more than that.. I think it’s to do with the reason her family wasn’t there.. ie there was some kind of manipulating she was orchestrating that the verdict threw a spanner into the works about. No doubt she will recover shortly and devise new tactics. But If what I just saw.. re she goes to 23 hour lockdown and no interviews is held to.. then that goes a long way to why she was crying too. How will she orchestrate plans.. she is going to have to get that sorted so right at the moment she probably feels out of control.. and she HATES feelig out of control

If found person or people were not truthful about being ok w DP, can they be prosecuted ?

I think that would be pretty much impossible to prove or prosecute

    • Kathy A.

I think it was ByeByeJA that mentioned upstairs that just because someone is DP qualified, they don’t have to sentence someone to death. That pretty much sums it up, It’s just too bad they didn’t have the luxury or the right to see all of JA’s interviews – how she felt “betrayed” by the jury’s verdict and refuses to show remorse.

Just sick about the jury’s decision, and that this isn’t over for Travis’s family, but the positive in all this is that at least they rendered a first-degree premeditated murder verdict. Jodi Ari-ass is not getting out of jail. Whether she spends the rest of her natural life in prison or gets the death penalty (because I don’t see Judge Stephens, if she stays on the case, giving her the option of parole after 25 years) neither option is a real win for her. Her hair will get grayer, her skin will get paler and pastier, she will probably start gaining some weight after nothing but a starch-heavy prison diet and very little exercise, and more importantly, all the attention she is receiving going away. You rarely hear anything about Scott Peterson, Drew Peterson, Phil Spector, or any other high-profile defendants from recent memory. She’s going to fade away and the Alexander family can take solace in the fact that she will never experience freedom again. Just be another number in the Arizona prison system.

    • GN5020
      05/23/2013 at 9:06 pm

I agree completely. We may all feel let down right now but let’s keep it in perspective. Guilty of 1st Degree Premeditated Murder with Extreme Cruelty. That is the starting place with the next jury, and we now know that Judge Stephens was emotionally invested so worse case, JA will spend the rest of her life in prison without parole, and will fade from notoriety. Let’s all support the Alexander family and keep the faith.

Still in shock and stunned. Have to have time to think. Maybe the AZ system is too weird to work. I cannot see one mitigating factor so they obviously vote their ‘gut’ and not the law. Maybe after a first degree plus an aggravation should be either death of LWOP, period. I think if that felony murder count hadn’t been included, it might have been easier to vote on.

Jury selection is THE most important part of entire process.

    • Robert exits Rotterdam
      05/23/2013 at 8:36 pm

I think the whole use of consultants to pick a jury corrupts the whole thing. Professional jurors is the only way. Some good on finance& white collar crime, others good on criminal, others for family and juvenile courts. People try to get out of them; other people gnaw to get on them. Always the search is for the lowest common denominator. All the searching into people’s lives and asking hundreds of questions is all bs.

One of the many reasons that Nurmi fought so hard to seal all the line items and details of what the state of Az paid for her defense. He specifically fought tooth and nail about not releasing the consultant detailed payment records – even though the judge agreed to seal ALL payment details except for the hourly rates for the consultants that testified and the # of hours paid of the mitigation specialist.

Seriously, this could actually help Juan. He was limited with his response to the mitigating factors because the DT did not put any witnesses up! This time he will get to do some terrific summary of the evidence the 1st jury believed (premeditation) and then all the shite that shows how manipulative she is …. And imagine, if Jodi and Jodi alone does her little sweet powerpoint with no remorse…. she is gone!

    • 05/23/2013 at 9:11 pm

Im thinking along these same lines but limited because of my lack of legal knowledge. I was thinking he may end up approaching it very differently than before.. especially in view of the extra interviews she gave. I know he tends to keep away from those things as much as possible but sometimes you need to use what you have to pull the emotive triggers and outrage buttons.

Sam and Stephen take care of the sympathy… he needs to take hold of the outrage side a little more.

Plus those delays.. no freakin way SURELY will that crap be allowed next time.. surely?? so that will help with actually getting the jury into deliberations quicker with the Vis’ fresher in their minds. Maybe others from the Alexander family will stand up if Sam and Stephen can’t do it again.. is that allowed or do they have to do it again cos they did it this time?

That sounds positive. Actually, when you think about mistrials that are retried, there is a greater percentage found guilty in the retrial. Phil Spector comes to mind. Let JM rest a bit and come back better than ever on the penalty phase, able to use everything JA spouted in her media blitz. Let’s all think positive.

    • 05/23/2013 at 9:18 pm

also.. remember they wont have had to see her on the stand for 18 days so they might not feel as attached to her. rut roh. maybe a longer than 20 min presentation on the cards.. cos that jury wouldnt have found her guilty of pre-med/felony first degree.. or heinously cruel.

ok ok stop thinking about now.. not liking that direction.

This might mark my first trip to the naughty corner but I am not sure it is worth the emotional torture for the Alexanders to pursue the DP.

I was totally for the DP but I didn’t understand the whole jail/prison thing. I thought she stayed in Maricopa County Day Camp for Wayward Girls unless she got the DP. Evidently though she goes the same place whether it’s DP or LWOP.

I am still a little confused about a life sentence and a LWOP sentence are they the same? because that would change my opinion.

    • HJ Madison
      05/23/2013 at 9:13 pm

Jail until SENTENCED … either way. We have seen/heard lots of conflicting stuff about what the conditions of LWOP will mean in prison. Some are posting it will be like another playground, others have posted it will be much more restrictive. She will have to be “classified” and that will take time. As a lifer she goes into Max security – as restrictive as possible, aside from Death Row.

The jurors had to have known this when they sat down to deliberate..otherwise, why would their first question be about what form to fill out if they’re hung? In retrospect, we all knew this, but some (like me) were sidelined with hope that it was just clarification and not something deeper. I suspect they knew this would happen when they reached agreement on the first two phases.

I will support the Alexander family with all I can. Maybe next plan of Attack is Dr. Phil. Being a degreed Dr. of Divinity, I have more of an authority to call myself a doctor than his quack ass… I’m also an Ordained Minister, and will ponder using that more to our advantage in the coming fight ahead.

Thank you all for your help this week. If we had anything to do with it, which I suspect we did, then we did The Right Thing. But please don’t credit me with any outcome. Truth be told I was drunk and outraged and decided to pick a fight. I woke up late the next morning, slightly hungover, and lamented, oh shit. Feeling I had dug myself a hole nearly as big as Jodi’s ass one and sad that I felt I had talked big and let everybody down. My friend said who were you calling last night, and I said, “everyone.”

And believe me ya’ll, it’s with tears in my eyes now to think that a micro-world of strangers came together here to honor and defend a truly decent young man cut down in his prime, with his best days ahead of him, by a monster. It shows me that The Fellowship is strong. And that we CAN, or we fail, but godamnit, we TRY.

    Syntara :
I think it’s more than that.. I think it’s to do with the reason her family wasn’t there.. ie there was some kind of manipulating she was orchestrating that the verdict threw a spanner into the works about. No doubt she will recover shortly and devise new tactics. But If what I just saw.. re she goes to 23 hour lockdown and no interviews is held to.. then that goes a long way to why she was crying too. How will she orchestrate plans.. she is going to have to get that sorted so right at the moment she probably feels out of control.. and she HATES feelig out of control

Well, if you’re right, Syn, that’s at least a silver lining to this difficult day.

      • 05/23/2013 at 10:28 pm

Oh, yeah. Really HJ, I appreciate the sentiment. Contrary to what you might think, I don’t really talk about my experience too much. Where I live now, is a military town. I keep to myself; don’t associate with other folks. Just don’t have much in common other than the ARMY with them, and I find most arrogant and dickheadish.

While I consider it an honor to be affiliated with the 101st, the whole story of how I got there is really quite an entertaining comedy of errors…I never would have got there but for the recession. I’m not the military type.

I guess the point I’m trying to make is that I then, and now, always had a difficult time embracing the fact that…well, I’m a shy guy when it comes to compliments or accolades, and I could never reckon how I was fighting for anyone’s freedom, when all I felt I was doing was fighting to stay alive. Or how the guys I was fighting were threatening anyone’s freedom back home.

I guess the lesson is is that I should just shut up and say thank you. Which is mainly why I just shut up in public anyway, if I go out.

        So thank you, HJ.

Since the cameras were only on HairyAss I never saw the judge cry. She choked a little thanking the jury. She has been through alot too with this trial and did a good job. To think there’s only one holdout is just speculation and doubtful. They could remove that one juror who promised they could make the death choice and go on deliberating. I don’t hate the defense lawyers, they did their jobs to the best of their ability. They might finally get their wish to be let go of their horrendous duties as her lawyer. I feel bad for Travis’s family to drag on. The best thing we might to do is just ask God to hold them in the palm of His hand. Meanwhile, HairyAss goes back to her cell, eats crummy food, sits by herself mostly and is still out of society. Think about it while we all get to walk around, go out to eat and enjoy being free. Justice will come, we just have to be a little more patient.

Just speculating here, but I’m guessing the 7 who voted for both counts voted for DP and one of the 5 who voted for felony went over to the 8. Not that it means anything…but maybe if they deliberated a bit longer all would fall in line..

    • NancyB
      05/23/2013 at 11:06 pm

The problem that I have is that I truly do NOT believe that they followed the law. What mitigator weighed more then the especially cruel aggravator that all 12 of them had already agreed on??? Book club? Donating hair?? Teaching ASL -sign language??? Teaching espanol? Her families feelings? A recycling program? Come on.

I wonder what these 4 may think and how they may feel when they see the AZ Central video from 2 days ago with the former guard from Perryville who said that the prison already has each and every one of those programs that SHE was going to introduce for the inmates?

What mitigation was of greater weight then the especially cruel aggravator??? ZIP. Which means they based their decision on some emotional and/or ethereal basis which is such a disappointment that their allegiance to rational thought and adherence to the law were so easily discarded in less than one hour.

Yes, I totally agree with that, Nancy. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt that some actually believed the mitigating factors outweighed the aggravators…in fact, I think this standard was not applied at all. As you so clearly lay out. It’s sickening.

I am confused. I hear she could have gotten death or life. Why do they say possible life with parole after 25 years? Isn’t LIFE, LIFE?

    • ringadingding
      05/23/2013 at 10:49 pm

I believe that if they had voted for Life, it would be up to the judge to decide whether it’s natural life or life with early release after 25 years–the distinction would be out of their hands.

      • Kathy A.
        05/23/2013 at 10:54 pm

That’s correct. The choices are Life Without Parole, Life with the possibility of Parole, or Death.

      • Gwen
        05/23/2013 at 10:57 pm

Thank you…most people say she will be locked up the rest of her life…and others bring up parole….I could accept life if she never had a chance to get out and spent 23 hours in her cell. Thinking she could be “growing hair” ,recycling..and drawing..just irks me to no end. SHE should be punished…not enjoying herself. Also would work for me if she had one whole wall of her cell covered with a big pic of Travis with his throat cut. Maybe then she’d have remorse!

    • HJ Madison
      05/23/2013 at 10:56 pm

Oh gosh … this has been so confusing! In AZ they have “Natural life” = Life with no possible parole (LWOP). And they have “Life” = 25 years confinement and then eligible for parole. However, today AZ has NO statute in place to cover parole after serving 25 years. So, without a procedure, what happens??

      • ringadingding
        05/23/2013 at 11:03 pm

Right, that was the argument when the jury was brought back for instructions. Willmott said that because there is no procedure for parole, JA would never be released; Juan said that just because there’s no procedure now, doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be one in 25 years.

  123. Moon

Why, oh why does HLN give credence to people like Judge Larry Seidlin? And Dr. Drew of all people – Seidlin is such a sorry excuse for a judge and his opinions make no sense. “The jury voted for no death! That’s double jeopardy to try this case again! 125. 05/23/2013 at 11:12 pm

Just because they said they could sentence someone to death, doesn’t mean that they would. If the only sentence that must be given for 1st degree murder is death, then no other options would have been given to the jury. Bottom line, the crime was considered bad enough to warrant the possibility of either death or life without parole. The jury had to be unanimous. Whoever was for death refused to consider life, whoever was for life refused to consider death. You can’t blame the jurors because they have done their job and they as individuals made their own respective decision regardless of whatever pressures other jurors or the outside world has tried to place on them.

We do know Jodi will eventually get death or LWOP but no matter which one is given, it still won’t be enough for some because for some people, this isn’t really about justice, it is about revenge.

        Spot on. Nancy. Thank you.

      • 05/23/2013 at 11:52 pm

Does Arizona law state that the aggravators automatically warrant death in absence of mitigating factors?

In my opinion, part of the problem is that this jury has been fed evidence in doses over too long of a period of time and some of the information had nothing whatsoever to do with the crime. They have had so much time to dwell on every tiny thing that it is quite possible they found themselves feeling like a mouse in a maze. This is where I find great fault in the Judge’s handling of this case. Then when it came time to deliberate, they have had to do that on three separate occasions and each time, they were given a little bit more to dwell on further. They had time to second guess themselves.

      • HJ Madison
        05/23/2013 at 11:54 pm

The mitigators were 27 years old, had no criminal history, lacked support by her family, was abused as a child and adult, was a good friend, tried to make the best of her life, always tried to improve herself, was a talented artist.

Not that I agree, but any juror could have hung their hat on any one of those. Lack of criminal history stands out and 5 jurors did not believe in the felony.

    • 05/23/2013 at 11:22 pm

Thank you!!! Lets put this in perspective…shes never getting out (I know – maybe parole but let’s be real!) They got the first two phases right…give them some credit for that. I’m sorry that the family doesn’t have closure but a DP would have meant a definite appeal and seeing the murderers face again — probably for a longer period of time.

      • ringadingding
        05/23/2013 at 11:37 pm

It’s more than not having closure. They have to endure more of those images, more days (weeks months) in the same room as their brother’s murderer. a reliving of the nightmare, the bashing of their brother’s reputation, lies about pedophelia, etc, not to mention the extreme financial hardship, lost employment, ruined relationships. That’s the perspective that matters. I feel any unanimous decision would be better than the hell this family has to keep living.

      • ringadingding
        05/23/2013 at 11:43 pm

Also, I’m afraid there will not be a DP with a second jury, so to me this is just pure torture to the family.

      • 05/24/2013 at 1:16 am

I guess my point has been that it appears the ONLY verdict that would have been acceptable would have been death. I’m guessing the jury trashing would have continued had they come back with life. We’re all disappointed…..no question.

I hear you but the problem is that she will NOT be in her cell 23 hrs a day after the 1st 2 or 3 yrs. I posted all the classification definitions that I got off of the azprison.gov site on the previous link. She will get TV with 16 channels including the Discovery Channel etc. They have an arts & craft program and she will be able to SELL her artwork. She will eventually earn a lot more privileges that are outlined in the post. If 23 hr lock down in her cell were a viable option then I too would be satisfied that she was truly being punished but that will NOT happen unless she gets the DP.

No, I think they are just following normal procedure and what is called for by AZ statute. Most people would have bonded out prior to trial, or would have gone to trial much faster. This “delay” is only 2 months (well, we shall see!).

Mysillybone, While I may be heavily chastised and lambasted for saying so, I find this last paragraph of your comment unfounded and insulting.

While the “some people” you refer to may well exist, I am yet to find any.

In addition to NancyB’s insightful comments I would like to add mine from a behavioural stance.

Jodi Arias pre-planned a crime she thought she would get away with. No ordinary crime, at least not where I come from. A cold, precisely stepped out deliberate murder of a man who had only ever tried to help her. A man who, against the wishes of his very best friends, had accommodated her every whim, whinge and selfish demand at great cost to himself personally and professionally.

His ONLY ‘crime’ towards her was to see through her projected persona and dare to request she exit his life. In response she chose to ensure he exit this life. Over the coming weeks she set about plotting HER revenge.

She devised a way to be allowed back into his house. To get him into a totally defenseless position, after toying with him for many hours. The final scene probably utilised ideas directly from the movie psycho just for her perverse pleasure and self entertainment.

After cold bloodily and heinously creating a scene worthy of said movie, she viciously and deliberately slit his neck while he was still alive. Dragged him back towards the shower, shot him in the face, shoved his body in the shower and left him to rot for as long as it would take his body to be discovered.

Meanwhile she happily left voicemails to his decomposing corpse inviting it to Othello (if you don’t know what that play is about look it up). Furthermore she acted as if nothing out of the ordinary had occured and she laughed and connived in her sweet innocent way into the arms of another man simply to establish an alibi. On this same alibi she even said told a female friend she would marry the rotting corpse and have it’s babies.

This is only the tip of a mountainous iceberg. How is being outraged at the injustice of this story and the culpability of it’s perpetrator deemed as merely looking for ‘revenge’? Any sane and well adjusted person would and should be outraged!

Then we come to the mitigating factors (in layman’s terms the justification and excuses) for these heinous actions.

A bunch of laughable suggestions and an amateurish powerpoint display hardly worthy of a “this is your life” classroom project from grade school.

I’m sorry but calling it a theatre of the absurd is the least of what it is. To suggest some on this jury failed to take in the reality of the situation in the final stage is NOT based in revenge, it is based on common sense and well founded logic.

Simple summation of the facts. After all it is quite simple, that Jodi purposefully set out to kill Travis in a very cold blooded and vicious way, torturing him during his murder.

It saddens me to think that all the jurors that didn’t vote for DP will soon regret that decision once they see her psychoness is action on tv.

This case is very emotional on many levels and I know that it is hard to decipher tone in writing but I truly did not mean my statement to be insulting to anyone and I’m sorry that you were insulted by it. Maybe I can explain it a little better. When I hear about a case involving a child molester or someone who intentionally harms a baby, the worst punishment that can be given for that crime is death but death is never enough punishment for me in those cases. I want the worst things imaginable to happen to that POS and a controlled death isn’t horrific enough. In those cases, it isn’t about justice for me because I want revenge! That is the same way some people feel about this case. Maybe revenge is the wrong term for me to use but I can’t think of another word that fits.

Anyway, again I apologize for insulting you and hope that I’ve explained it a little better somehow.

    • NancyB
      05/24/2013 at 3:46 am

John, The 1st Degree conviction stands & so does the verdict that the murder was especially cruel. So the only portion of the trial that must be redone is the penalty phase which includes the mitigation followed by the jury deciding between life or death.

8 FOR DEATH – 4 FOR LIFE…….I hope all 12 sit down and watch every single interview she did……every one. The 3 hole wonder stated that the JURY BETRAYED HER in one of the interviews…… this convicted murderer will NEVER be rehabilitated…..she is way to far beyond any redemption…..now she sits in a 7 x 11 cell……23/7…….which to me is not enough. Not nearly enough for the ‘MISTAKE’ ( she said in her POWER-POINT presentation) So according to the Slut……killing Travis is a ‘MISTAKE’…..,,, if she ever gets her hands on a mirror……in there…..she’ll be kissing it until her lying lips fall off…. I also read that Nurmi and Willa will remain as her defense……until the Judge dismisses them. Surely I thought they would be in another country by this time…..but not so. Truth be told, Nurmi sat as far away from the KILLER as he possibly could…..while Willa dealt with the Control Freak……..even touched her ……. I hope she cloroxed her hands….thoroughly.
